    Formula

    Quick answer

Win percentage = wins ÷ games played. With ties counted as half a win, as the NFL does, it is (wins + ties ÷ 2) ÷ games. An 11-5-1 record is (11 + 0.5) ÷ 17 = .676. Enter your record above.

    How to calculate win percentage

Winning percentage is the share of games a team won, written as a decimal to three places. Divide wins by games played:

win % = wins ÷ (wins + losses) no ties
    win % = (wins + ties ÷ 2) ÷ (wins + losses + ties) ties as half a win

    A 52-30 season is 52 ÷ 82 = .634. Sports tables drop the leading zero and say “six thirty-four”, so .634 means 63.4%. A perfect record is 1.000.

    How ties are counted

Leagues treat ties differently, which is why the tool lets you choose:

    • Half a win: the NFL’s tie-breaking rules state that tie games count as one-half win and one-half loss for both clubs. An 11-5-1 record is (11 + 0.5) ÷ 17 = .676.
    • Not counted: ties are left out of both the wins and the games played, so 8-4-6 becomes 8 ÷ 12 = .667. Check your league’s rules before using this one.
    • As a loss: useful when only an outright win matters, so 8-4-6 becomes 8 ÷ 18 = .444.

Some leagues rank teams by points instead of winning percentage. The NHL, for example, gives 2 points for a win and 1 point for an overtime or shootout loss. The win percentage explainer shows how this compares with a winning percentage.

How many wins do you need?

Enter a target and the games left. The tool finds the fewest wins that reach the target, assuming no more ties. A team at 6-6 that wants to finish at .600 with 8 games left needs 0.6 × 20 = 12 wins in total, so 6 more: a 6-2 finish. Leave the games-left box empty to see how many straight wins it would take.

    Win percentage in a spreadsheet

With wins in B2, losses in C2 and ties in D2, use =(B2+D2/2)/(B2+C2+D2) and format the cell with three decimal places. Without ties it is =B2/(B2+C2).

    Common questions

    About this tool.

Divide wins by games played. A team that is 52-30 has won 52 of 82 games, so its win percentage is 52 ÷ 82 = .634, or 63.4%.

It depends on the league. The NFL counts a tie as half a win and half a loss, so 11-5-1 is (11 + 0.5) ÷ 17 = .676. Other leagues leave ties out or rank by points instead.

It means the team has won exactly half of its games, for example 8-8. Above .500 means more wins than losses.

It is a sports convention. Standings show the winning percentage as a three-place decimal such as .634, which is the same as 63.4%.

Multiply the target by the total games in the season, round up, and subtract the wins you already have, counting ties as half a win where that applies. For .600 over 20 games you need 12 wins in total.
