Lists and budgets

Percent of total calculator.

Paste a list of values to see what share each one is of the total. The shares add up to exactly 100%, the cumulative column shows where most of the total sits, and you can download the result as CSV.

Quick answer

Each item’s percent of total = item ÷ sum of all items × 100. In a budget of 3,300 where rent is 1,450, rent is 1,450 ÷ 3,300 × 100 = 43.9%. Paste a whole list above to get every share at once.

How to calculate percent of total

To find what share each item is of a total, add up all the items, then divide each item by that sum and multiply by 100:

percent of total = item ÷ (sum of all items) × 100

In the sample budget the items add up to 3,300. Rent is 1,450 ÷ 3,300 × 100 = 43.9%, savings are 600 ÷ 3,300 × 100 = 18.2%, and so on down the list.

Why rounded percentages don’t always add up to 100

Round three equal shares of 33.33…% to whole numbers and you get 33% + 33% + 33% = 99%. Each rounding is correct, but the small errors add up. This tool uses the largest-remainder method: it rounds every share down, then gives the leftover units to the shares that were rounded down the most. The column always adds up to exactly 100%, and no share moves by more than one unit in the last decimal place. The CSV download keeps the exact shares too.

What the cumulative column tells you

Sorted largest first, the cumulative column shows how few items make up most of the total. In the sample, rent and savings alone are 62.1% of spending. This is the same idea as a Pareto chart, and it is the quickest way to see where to cut a budget or which products bring in most of the sales.

Pasting your data

Put one item on each line, with the label first and the number last: Rent, 1450, Rent 1450, or a row copied straight from a spreadsheet (label and value in two columns). Thousands separators like 1,450 and currency symbols are fine. Lines without a number are skipped and listed so you can fix them. Values must be 0 or more, because a negative item has no meaningful share of a total. Up to 500 items are used.

Percent of total in Excel or Google Sheets

With values in B2:B7, put =B2/SUM($B$2:$B$7) in C2, fill it down and format column C as a percentage. The dollar signs keep the total fixed while the formula moves down the rows. The Excel percentage formula generator writes this formula for your own cell range.

Common questions

About this tool.

Add up all the values, divide each value by that total and multiply by 100. If rent is 1,450 out of total spending of 3,300, rent is 1,450 ÷ 3,300 × 100 = 43.9% of the total.

Because each share was rounded on its own, and the rounding errors add up. Three equal shares round to 33% each, which totals 99%. This tool uses largest-remainder rounding so the shown shares always add up to exactly 100%.

Yes. Copy two columns, the labels and the values, and paste them into the box. Each row becomes one item.

=B2/SUM($B$2:$B$7), filled down the column and formatted as a percentage. The dollar signs keep the total range fixed.

Not meaningfully. Shares of a total only make sense when every value is 0 or more, so the tool asks you to remove negative values.
