Percentages, letter grades, GPA and CGPA are four ways of saying the same thing. Here is how they map to each other — with the caveat that exact bands vary by institution — plus the CBSE formula and the "what do I need on the final?" calculation.
Convert percentage scores to letter grades and GPA, understand weighted vs unweighted 4.0 scales, use the CBSE CGPA x9.5 formula, and work out the exam score you need on a final.

Most US schools use bands close to the table below. Exact cutoffs differ between institutions, so always check your syllabus — this is the common default, not a universal rule.
| Percentage | Letter | GPA (unweighted) |
|---|---|---|
| 97–100% | A+ | 4.0 |
| 93–96% | A | 4.0 |
| 90–92% | A− | 3.7 |
| 87–89% | B+ | 3.3 |
| 83–86% | B | 3.0 |
| 80–82% | B− | 2.7 |
| 77–79% | C+ | 2.3 |
| 73–76% | C | 2.0 |
| 70–72% | C− | 1.7 |
| 67–69% | D+ | 1.3 |
| 60–66% | D | 1.0 |
| Below 60% | F | 0.0 |
So "what is a 4.0 GPA in percentage?" has no single answer — a 4.0 corresponds to roughly 93–100% (an A) on the unweighted scale above.
Unweighted GPA caps every course at 4.0 regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB — so an A in an AP class can count as 5.0. That's why weighted GPAs above 4.0 exist. When comparing GPAs, always confirm which scale is being used.
India's CBSE board uses a fixed multiplier of 9.5 to move between its 10-point CGPA and a percentage:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5| CGPA | Percentage |
|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95.0% |
| 9.2 | 87.4% |
| 9.0 | 85.5% |
| 8.0 | 76.0% |
| 7.0 | 66.5% |
| 6.0 | 57.0% |
The 9.5 factor comes from the average of the percentage bands assigned to grade points A1–E, and applies to the overall CGPA across the five main subjects.
Suppose coursework is worth 70% of your grade and you currently sit at 75%, and the final exam is the remaining 30%. To finish the course at a target of 80% overall, solve:
Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
where w is the final's weight (0.30 here): (80 − 75 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (80 − 52.5) ÷ 0.30 = 91.67%. You'd need about 92% on the final to lift your overall grade to 80%. If the required number comes out above 100%, the target is unreachable with that exam alone.
On the common unweighted US scale, a 4.0 GPA corresponds to an A — roughly 93 to 100%. Exact cutoffs vary by school, and weighted scales can push GPAs above 4.0 for honors or AP courses.
For India's CBSE system, divide your percentage by 9.5 to get CGPA, or multiply CGPA by 9.5 to get percentage. For example, 87.4% is a CGPA of 9.2.
Unweighted GPA caps every class at 4.0. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes (often +0.5 for Honors, +1.0 for AP/IB), so it can exceed 4.0.
Use Needed = (Target - Current x (1 - w)) / w, where w is the final's weight. With coursework at 75% (70% weight) and a target of 80%, you'd need (80 - 52.5) / 0.30 = 91.67% on the final.
